Many years ago televisions were called televisions but mysteriously radios were called wirelesses, a term in common use well into the 1960s. The explanation is that a radio receiver and a wireless receiver are the same thing, both being able to receive broadcast signals, by means of electromagnetic signals, without being connected by a wire – a revolutionary idea in olden times!
