Techniques known as generative engine optimisation (GEO) or answer engine optimisation (AEO) seek to ensure that text and information from your website features in the answers provided by generative AI searches.
Use of AI driven search is growing exponentially, with platforms such as Claude, Gemini and ChatGPT becoming the natural default for many people, whilst Google’s AI overviews already answer a significant proportion of search queries.
It follows that any query answered by AI reduces the searcher’s propensity to actually visit a website at all!
Good “traditional” on page SEO undoubtedly helps AI engines to include you in AI summaries and AI searches, however there are separate techniques that can improve your website’s chances of appearing in generative searches.
The objective of these techniques is to guide AI comprehension and therefore help the large language models used by AI to use your website content in its answers.
In our opinion, the days of traditional search are limited, and generative search, which provides complete answers, as opposed to a directory listing of websites, will take over.
